Locksmith Essential Tools of the Trade
Just like surgeons need scalpels to dissect a human body, locksmiths need picks to open locks. Using hairpins for lock-picking is a figment of the movies. In truth, repairing locks is a delicate process that should be done by a trained locksmith.
Professional locksmiths use a specialized set of equipment to do their job. Locksmith tools may be a bit confusing, especially for beginners who want to make a name in the locksmith trade. Nonetheless, both beginner and veteran locksmiths should carry five basic tools at any given moment.
The Plug Spinner is an essential locksmith tool used for reverting locks. To return the plug to its default unlocked position, locksmiths use plug spinners to lift, rotate and move the plug. Naturally, a locksmith should know the accurate positioning of the various lock components in order to use the plug spinner.
For more complicated locks, plug spinners may not be adequate.
There are instances when locksmiths would need devices called Computerized Picks. They are useful in cracking open more secure lock designs such as combination systems. Equipped with high-tech features, computerized picks are designed to configure up to 6 pins and disc patterns.
Another advanced locksmith tool is the Electric Pick Gun, which can be likened to the regular electric drill. Electric pick guns are small drills that run on electricity. Just like the size of drills can be adjusted, there are various sizes of picks that can be connected to the pick gun.
Key Extractors are also handy tools for locksmiths.
There are times when a key would snap into two, leaving key parts wedged into the keyhole. In such cases, locksmiths use key extractors to remove broken keys and other foreign material that are stuck in the lock cylinders.
A locksmith would also need Tension Wrenches.
They come in 3 types according to amount of pressure exerted: light, medium and rigid. Most locksmiths carry all three types depending on what the situation needs. Tension wrenches, as implied by the name, are used to apply controlled amounts of turning pressure to gain access to the shear line.
The plug spinner, computerized pick, electric pick gun, key extractor and tension wrench are the basic tools of the locksmith trade. There are other tools that locksmiths can use to repair, install and open locks. Deadbolt installation kits, locksmith hammers, router drills and key cutters are just some of these additional tools. Using the correct tools is important for both the locksmith and customer. For house and vehicle owners, a locksmith’s use of improper tools can cause damage to the lock or door itself.
For the locksmith, purchasing at least the 5 basic tools of the trade is considered a long-term investment. Starting out with the right tools can help a locksmith do his job properly and gain positive feedback from customers.
Gradually, the locksmith’s reputation will rise as customers refer family and friends to his services. As a result, the locksmith will have a steady stream of income that can help him buy more specialized tools or expand his business.
