If you can see daylight under your front door, you can also feel your heating bill. The bottom of a door is the hardest joint in the whole building envelope to seal — it has to be airtight and watertight while a heavy slab swings across it thousands of times a year — and it’s the part people understand least. Three separate components live down there, they fail in different ways, and swapping the wrong one is the most common wasted repair in the trade.
The three parts, and what each one does
The door sweep
The sweep is attached to the door itself, along the bottom edge. It’s the moving half of the seal. Most are an aluminium carrier holding a vinyl, rubber or brush insert; some are a simple U-shaped channel that slides over the bottom of the slab. Its job is to press against the threshold when the door is closed and to lift clear when it swings.
The threshold
The threshold is the piece you step on — fixed to the floor, spanning the opening between the jambs. Better ones are adjustable: a row of screws under a cap lets you raise or lower the top surface a few millimetres to meet the sweep. That adjustability is the single most useful feature at the bottom of a door and almost nobody knows it’s there.
The sill
The sill is the sloped structural piece beneath the threshold that carries water away from the building. On a properly built entrance the sill has a pitch to the outside and a drip edge underneath. When the sill is compromised, water doesn’t just get in — it gets into the framing, and the repair stops being about weatherstripping.
Working out which one failed
Daylight in a thin even line across the whole width
The sweep has compressed or hardened with age, or the threshold has been adjusted down. Both are cheap fixes. Try the threshold adjustment screws first — lift the cap slightly and see whether the gap closes and the door still swings freely.
Daylight at one end only
The door has dropped or the frame has shifted. A worn top hinge is the usual culprit, and adjusting the threshold to chase it just makes the door drag at the other end. Fix the hinge, then re-check the seal.
Water pooling inside the door line
This is a sill problem, not a sweep problem. Either the pitch is wrong, the sill has rotted or settled, or water is getting behind the threshold rather than under it. Sealing the gap will trap the water instead of stopping it, which is worse.
Draft with no visible gap
Look at the corners where the bottom seal meets the side weatherstripping. Air finds the junction. Also check the threshold-to-jamb joint — an unsealed corner there passes a surprising volume of air and it’s invisible from the inside.
The door drags on the threshold
Over-adjustment, a swollen slab, or a settled floor. Grinding the bottom of the door is the tempting fix and usually the wrong one, because it removes the surface the sweep needs to seal against. Lower the threshold or address the door’s alignment instead — the same alignment logic behind most residential door repair work.
Why this fails faster in Toronto than almost anywhere
Southern Ontario runs a freeze-thaw cycle that punishes exterior thresholds. Water gets under the sill, freezes, expands, and lifts the assembly a fraction of a millimetre. Repeat that through a winter and the threshold is no longer flat. Add road salt tracked in on boots, which corrodes the aluminium and eats the fasteners, and a threshold that would last twenty years in a mild climate here starts failing in under ten.
The vinyl insert in a sweep has a related problem: it stays flexible at room temperature and stiffens in the cold, so the seal is at its worst exactly when you need it most. This is why a door that felt fine in October is drafty in January — the material changed, not the gap.
Aluminium and commercial doors are a different job
On an aluminium storefront or a commercial entrance, the bottom of the door usually carries a different arrangement: a sweep mounted in a channel in the bottom rail, sometimes with a drop-down automatic seal, and a threshold designed to handle far more foot traffic. The parts are less standardised, they’re tied to the door manufacturer’s extrusion profile, and getting the right one is a matter of identifying the system rather than buying a generic part off the shelf. If the bottom rail itself has separated from the glazing or the corner joints have loosened, the seal is a symptom and the door needs aluminium door repair before any weatherstripping will hold.
What a proper repair looks like
- Check the door before the seal. A door that isn’t hanging square will destroy any sweep you fit. Hinges first, seal second.
- Match the part to the door. Sweep profiles are not universal. The wrong carrier width either won’t seal or will bind on the threshold.
- Use the adjustment you already have. Most adjustable thresholds have never been touched since installation. Free millimetres.
- Seal the ends. The corners where bottom meets side are where the air actually moves. A proper install seals them.

As a stopgap in February, sure. As a repair, no — it compresses permanently, holds moisture against the bottom of the door and accelerates rot on a wood slab.

Look for a row of screw heads along the top surface, often under small plastic caps. If they’re there, turning them raises and lowers the cap. If the surface is solid with no fasteners visible, it’s a fixed threshold and the sweep has to do all the work.
